Finn Family: The Knitted Hearts Project {Southlake, TX}

The Knitted Hearts session day was rained out a few weeks ago (bummer!), but I was able to schedule in the Finn family during another mini day and was so delighted to meet them!  Below is their sweet story –

In 2009 when Ryan and I were married, we knew that one day we wanted to add to our family through adoption. “Our plan” was to have two of our own and then adopt a third child. Well, God obviously had other plans for us and we are so thankful that he did. Ryan began working for Children’s Medical Center in January of 2012 as part of the Clinical Response Team. While working at Children’s, he began a friendship with a Dallas cop named Kyle. Kyle and his wife had adopted two boys through the foster system and he knew that Ryan and I had a heart for adoption. After an almost three-hour phone conversation with Kyle, we knew that God was calling us to foster and praying that through fostering we would be able to adopt a child into our forever family.

We began training in August of 2013 and we were licensed as a foster to adopt home in October of 2013. We welcomed our first babies into our home shortly after we were licensed. The twins were in our home for about six weeks straight from the NICU unit weighing barely five pounds each. If you want to jump right into fostering, just say yes to twins. I know my parents were looking down laughing at the exhausted, crazy, delusional parents that we had become in just a few short weeks. The twins left right before Thanksgiving in 2013. It was sad to see them go, but the memories we hold of them will be etched in our minds forever.

In December of 2013, we welcomed our second baby into our home he was 18 months at the time. We were able to give him a magical Christmas last year. He was only with us a short time and left about two months later. Ryan had Surgery in March 2014 so we decided to take a break from fostering so he could recover and we could decide what our best step was as a family.

On April 24th, we were getting ready for bed when our home phone rang. It was Nikisha who was our investigator from our twins case back in October. Ryan answered the phone and Nikisha told us she had a baby for Brandon. During the fostering process Brandon became attached to the babies that we had in our home. When the twins left with Nikisha he asked, “When are you going to bring me another baby?” Nikisha had been laying in bed with her husband that night reading Asher’s case file and trying to figure out what the next step was. He was in a foster home but it was not an adoptive home so she needed to find a family that wanted to adopt him. She was about to go to sleep when she sat up in and bed and told her husband that she knows of the perfect family. After searching for our number which was a miracle to begin with because her computer had crashed and she had lost all of our information. She finally found our name and number on a sticky note from seven months before when we had fostered the twins.

Long story short, we of course said yes to this baby that all we knew was the he was born in March. We were able to meet him in May and he finally came home on June 30th. After instantly falling love with this sweet four-month old, we were in a waiting period to be able to adopt him. On December 10, 2014, we were surrounded by our friends and family as we officially adopted Asher Anthony Finn into our forever family. If you were to ask Brandon what adopted means he would tell you it means “No one can take him away”.

We could have never had completed this journey without our friends and family. Through the process God brought people into our lives from our agency, CPS,CASA,Chosen Ones, and our attorney who have supported and guided us through this whole process. As we start this new chapter in our lives as a family of four we are always reminded that we walk by faith and not by sight and that God plans are better than anything we could have ever dreamed of.

A special thanks to the Finns for rocking out their session and sharing their adoption story.  I’m planning to reschedule the remaining Knitted Hearts clients within the next few months, so be on the lookout for more!
